In traditional Irish societies mothers used to give their daughters Claddagh rings when they come of age.

Claddagh rings are used to symbolize the relationship status of the wearer.

When it is worn on the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is not looking for a relationship (may already be in one or may not be in one, but is not looking).

When it is worn the right hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is single and may be looking for love.

when it is worn on the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is engaged.

When the Claddagh ring is worn the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is married.
