What is Ragnarok?

The Vikings used to believe that there will come a day when the world in its existing form would end. According to them, this day was for Ragnarok, (old Norse Ragnarökr) which is not regarded only has doom for mankind but also that of Gods and Goddesses. They believed that this would actually be the ultimate battle between the Giants and Aesir and will happen at the plains called Vigrid.

It is this place where the enormous Midgard serpent will arise from the sea, while it would splash its tail and spray its poison everywhere which causes huge waves to crash onto land. Meanwhile, the fire giant called Surtr is believed to then set Asgard and the rainbow bridge, called Bifrost on fire. Then the Fenrir wolf would break out of his chains to spread destruction and death. The wolves called Sköll and Hati will swallow sun and moon and the world tree Yggdrasil will shake the earth.

Odin during Ragnarok:

Fenrir and Odin wolves will then fight with each other to death Loki turns on Aesir to fight Heimdall. They end up killing one another. Tyr will then fight the watchdog called “Garm” which safeguards the gates of Hell and they too kill each other.

Thor during Ragnarok?

Thor will then fight the Midgard Serpent and slaughters it, but himself dies due to the poisonous injuries caused by the Serpent. Freyr will be killed by Surtr, the fire giant and ultimately, Surtr will be setting all nine worlds on fire followed by everything sinking into the boiling ocean. Gods can’t do anything to stop Ragnarok. The only comfort that Odin has is that he is able to forecast that Ragnarok will not end the world.

Signs of Ragnarok:

There will be visible signs that would tell about the upcoming Ragnarok “the end of the world”. God Baldr’s murder will be the first sign of Ragnarok. Baldr is the son of Odin and Frigg and this sign already has taken place.

The sign that comes second is that there will come three long, uninterrupted, cold winters which will stay for as long as three years and there will be no summer in between those winters. These winters have a special name called “Fimbulwinter”. During these three years that will seem to be never-ending, the world will be inundated by wars, and brothers will be killed by brothers.

The third sign will be that the two wolves appear in the sky and swallow the moon and the sun. Even the stars will vanish and this way, the world will fall into a great darkness.

Conclusion

Despite all the chaotic scenes of the war, some of the Gods will still survive and among those survivors will be Odin’s sons called Vali, his brother, Honir and Vidar. However,Thor’s sons Magni and Modi will then receive Thor’s hammer Mjölnir.
